This is Jyl...

Jyl Robbins is a McGown trained instructor and completed her certification at the Northern Teachers Workshop in 2007. She began hooking at the age of eight thanks to her mother, Joan Blauvelt, who also was a rug hooking instructor in Southwestern Michigan.

Jyl began teaching in the Southern Indiana – Louisville Kentucky area and was a founding member of the Buffalo Trace Rug Hooking Guild of ATHA. She co-owned Cat House Rugs with Mary Silva in New Albany, Indiana for 7 years. During that time Jyl taught classes in her shop two nights per week with workshops on various weekends.

Jyl continues to teach at workshops and in her home. Since retiring from a banking career Jyl has been teaching on the road accompanied by her logistics manager (husband), John. Their teaching travels have taken them to South Dakota, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan, New Hampshire Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maine.

Her work has been featured in many shows in the Kentuckiana area and at Sauder Village. Her rug “Naomi’s Hudson Star” was selected for the 2023 Celebrations magazine, Rhapsody was featured in the 2024 Celebrations, the rug “Woven” won peoples choice award at Sauder in 2025.

Fine hooking and shading are a favorite of Jyl’s, and she reintroduced the technique of hooking a true plaid pattern several years ago. Pairing this technique with fine shading the season tiles were started, Holly Plaid, Pumpkin Plaid, Sunflower Plaid and Dogwood Plaid.

Geometric patterns are another area the allows tremendous creativity with color and pattern and are a joy to hook. Jyl likes to put a spin on her geometrics by adopting a challenging color plan that is unexpected or to change the pattern to a unique design. Jyl’s own designs include MCM Geo, Woven, Boxes, and Shadow and Light II.

Jyl has hooked many wide cut rugs with #8 being a favorite. Although geometrics are near and dear to Jyl’s heart, some of her latest creations are Naomi’s Texas Star (Peoples Choice Award at Sauder and in Celebrations Magazine 2023), Frosty Friends (Designed by Susan Krueger), and This Witch is Retired (designed by Judy Privett). Jyl welcomes all levels of rug hookers in her classes and will work individually with the students.

Jyl’s classes cover several topics which include:

· Perspective

· Color

· Light Bright Dark Dull

· Finishing

· Making your rug your own

Students will receive handouts covering these topics as well as practical demonstration regarding each subject.
